The Pottery Cottage Bishops Nympton, Devon, EX36 4PQ

The Pottery Cottage
The Pottery is a thatched village home, built around 1650. It has had various uses since then – it was once a tailor’s home and workshop. It became a pottery in the 20 th century, and the flue for the kiln can still be seen on the outside wall behind the kitchen. The last potter was Mr Ruthven, still remembered by many of the villagers, who produced pottery under the brand “Nympton Pottery”, identifiable by a stylised mark of the letters “N” and “P” on the base of the object. He used the front room of the Pottery as a shop. All of the houses in the main street were thatched originally, but many were destroyed by a huge fire. Most were rebuilt with slate roofs.

The road through the village is not particularly busy. Bear in mind, however, that this is a working village. There are often tractors, farm lorries, and horses using the road, so take care when leaving the cottage, and remember the country code if you are walking dogs.
In Bishops Nympton:

The Post Office was threatened with closure by those who know “best”. Thankfully, with help from Devon County Council, the community rallied. The Bishops Nympton Community Shop, with a partnership Post Office, is well and truly up and running. Times of business are advertised outside. If you want a newspaper keeping – the volunteer staff will happily oblige.

The church, St Mary the Virgin, is kept locked apart from services, bell ringing practice, and prayers. The times of services vary, as the church is one of a number in a large parish. Details are posted by the gate opposite the school. You will find the village green down West Street, opposite.

There is a children’s playground adjacent.

Around the village are several footpaths signposted for walks.

Village events are usually advertised on the notice boards outside the church and school.
