The Pottery Cottage Bishops Nympton, Devon, EX36 4PQ
Exmoor
Exmoor is beautiful in any season of the year. Even driving up the A361 in the evening, you may catch sight of red deer grazing in the fields to the left, by the turning for Rackenford.
The Exmoor National Park is mainly in Somerset, but a significant part of it lies in North Devon. South Molton rightly calls itself “The Gateway to Exmoor”. Unlike its rugged neighbour Dartmoor, with high granite tors, Exmoor has softer landscape with rolling heather-clad hills, ancient oak wooded valleys, and farmland. Exmoor is the home of Britain’s oldest pure breed pony, as well as the largest red deer in the country. Tarr Steps, 10 miles from the Pottery, is the oldest and longest clapper bridge we have.
Exmoor is hugely popular for walking and wildlife spotting.
South Molton
This is the nearest town, about 3 miles away. It originated in early Saxon times. The Domesday Book of 1086 showed it to be a town of some importance, with 4 priests listed – a large number for a town of this size. Its early wealth came from its importance as a centre for the local wool trade.
If you need a doctor, the Health Centre is in East Street, telephone 01769 573101. For animals, there is are vets at Horsepond Veterinary Centre, Horsepond Meadow, 01769 572226, and Market Veterinary Centre, Southley Road, 01769 572176.
The town square is still surrounded by shops. The main market day is Thursday, with a pannier market on Saturday. The fourth Saturday of each month is a farmers market. All are well worth a visit.
There is a museum next to the market. Across the road is a tourist information office. The town also boasts a swimming pool, tennis courts, and a skate park. The Quince Honey Farm has an exhibition on the first floor, giving the full story of honey and beeswax, from hive to home. Open 9am to 5pm daily, adults £3.95, children £2.75. Under 5s free.

On the edge of Exmoor, the working village of Bishops Nympton features in the BBC2 series “A Year on Exmoor”.
